Do you remember getting the winter blues as a child? I can almost guarantee that you cannot. The reason you did not get the winter blues as a child was because you loved the winter as much as spring and summer. What happened? You got older and found yourself a lot more in demand, you may have a job and you may be a parent or spouse.
When you do find yourself home and free from work for the day, bundle up and try Box Trapping for fun. Now before all you animal and bird lovers start hollering, let me tell you that I am not talking about harming any animal or other critters at all, this is simply an activity for fun, and if you don't want to do it, that's up to you. It's like hunting and fishing, millions of folks in the USA love to do one or both, whiles millions of others don't do either.
How do you make a box trap, a box trap also called a llive trap, does not hurt any animal or critters it traps. I am not going into the details on building them, but basicly there are 2 main types. There are box traps that have a tray or lever which holds food or bait, once the animal enters the trap and starts eating the food, a part is tripped, which causes the door or some other area of the trap to close, safely holding the animal inside.
Another type of box trap simply consists of heavy box turned upside down, one end of the box is held up with a stick underneath the edge, around the stick is a fishing line or some other small string, towards the back of the box, the area that is nearest the ground, food or bait is placed for the animal. This type of live trap must be sprung manualy by someone, I used to hide in the weeds when I was a kid, and when one of my families chickens entered the trap, I would pull the string, pulling out the stick, and capture the chicken. Then I would just remove the chicken, maybe sit and hold it awhile and then let it go back to eating and running around the yard.
What's great about these live traps, is theres as many animals, birds and other critters outside in the snow as in the summer, except maybe for chickens. If you want to purchase a nice box trap, visit a local Tractor Supply store as they have some nice ones. If you want a cheaper one, just use a nice old wooden crate or some other heavy box, but you will need to spring the this type of trap manualy using the technique described eariler. Once you capture a bird, or some other critter, safely let it go as no animals should be harmed for fun. So, the next time you feel like theres nothing to do in the cold months of winter, get outside and try box trapping for fun, it's a great way to fight the winter blues.
