Needlefish get their name from the whey they look, they have very long, and snake like bodies with a long and pointed mouth, when the fish is held upside down in resembles a large needle, and the fish has a main body color that is shiny-silver colored, which also resembles a needle. The long mouths of the Needlefish are full of lots of little, razor sharp teeth, which it can use to easily grasp and shred prey.

The long, sharp and strong mouths of the Needlefish have made them dangerous at times to fishermen and swimmers, they often leap out of the waters and fast speed, and have penetrated into wooden boats, and they have also injured several humans as well, in fact there have even been deaths caused by injuries suffered from them. The numerous sharp teeth, also make them very dangerous to anglers who are not experienced handling them, if they try to reach into their mouths to remove hooks, they are going to get a very nasty bite.

When pole fishing for Needlefish, you need to remember that their mouths are extremely long, and hard, and they are far from the fish's throat, when they bite to attack the food they are after, they will clamp down their jaws onto it, like a vise grip, but if the angler pulls on the line, it will either be cut by ones of the fish's numerous sharp teeth, or the fish will open it's jaws and the bait or lure will be lost from the fish. When they bite, you must wait awhile for the fish to actually swallow the hook, then pull to set it in the fishes throat area. You must use a long steel leader to hold your bait, lure, hook, as the fish's sharp teeth will easily cut line.

When pole fishing for Needlefish with bait, many anglers have had good success catching Needlefish by using frogs, small live baitfish, or even pieces of cut baitfish. When using lures instead of bait, you may wish to use such proven favorites as shiny silver spoons, lures that dive and surface and resemble fish, as well as larger artificial fish lures in the 3-5 inch range.
